Kim Lighting is one of more than 80 brands offered by international manufacturer Hubbell Incorporated. The parent company’s products fall in the categories of Lighting and Controls; Electrical and Wiring; Data Communications; Power and Utilities; and Gas and Oil.
Kim Lighting has been a part of the Hubbell family since 2002 when its former parent company, U.S. Industries Inc., was acquired by Hubbell. Kim is currently one of close to 30 Hubbell brands in the Lighting and Controls category.
The Kim Manufacturing Company was founded in California in 1934 by illuminating engineer F.B. Nightingale. Since then, the company has specialized in the design and production of outdoor architectural and landscape lighting products. Nightingale, who had previously been on the path to becoming a magician, brought his unique flair to his company’s designs and from early on, innovation in both form and function has been a hallmark of Kim’s contributions to the lighting industry.
Kim Lighting lists “moonlighting, birdhouse fixtures, and in-grade up-lighting” among Nightingale’s inventions. A timeline of Kim Lighting’s industry-firsts ranges from the introduction of its EKG full-cutoff area and site lighting fixture in 1971 as the first conventional shoebox luminaire to its 2009 unveiling of lighting solutions featuring micro emitter LED technology. Interestingly, the EKG is still a top seller in the company’s arsenal and has seen a design upgrade that incorporates Kim Lighting’s proprietary Pico Prism LED technology.
The company takes particular pride in producing fixtures which are a successful mix of high-performance components and elegant exterior design. Kim landscape lighting range of products now includes floodlights, bollards, and building-mounted fixtures, as well as roadway, in grade, pedestrian, steps, and low-level lighting solutions. The company also makes luminaires for ceiling, canopy and garage installation. Additionally, Kim now provides LED retrofit kits for several of its products which have been popular members of its catalog for decades.
Each category of Kim Lighting’s illumination solutions comes with variations to better satisfy customers’ specific needs. Kim Lighting bollards, for example, can be bought in either the Round or Square design with each also offering the company’s Vandal-Resistant option.
Kim Lighting celebrated its 80th anniversary in 2014 but the company is still very much a force to be reckoned with in the industry. In fact, the Altitude range of Kim Lighting fixtures for area, site, and roadway settings was one of three Hubbell products honored at the 2019 Architectural SSL Magazine Product Innovation Awards.
The Altitude is not the only Kim Lighting product getting a good deal of attention from industry players. The company’s Ouro collection also enjoys its fair share of popularity. The Ouro is area and site lighting offered in both post top and arm mount styles. Both come in a range of sizes but the smaller options are labeled Kim Lighting UR20 while the larger ones bear the UR28 designation.
Kim lighting has its headquarters in City of Industry, an industrial suburb in Los Angeles, California. Its products are available worldwide and Kim Lighting sales agents can be found easily using the US, Canada or International Sales Lookup pages on the company’s website.
